Painting Mexico with Judy Wise — Kathie Vezzani
Painting Mexico with Judy Wise

Whenever I have a question about a material or how the heck an artist created what they did, I turn to mi amiga, Judy Wise.

I absolutely adore going through museums with Judy for the same reasons. She often poses questions to me to see how my mind is interpreting what I see, but for the most part she just lets me wander until I have a question or a comment. She knows everything and has pretty much played with every medium out there

This is why I have asked her to share some of this knowledge in a workshop and lucky for us, it's going to be in Zipolite, Oaxaca along the coast of Oaxaca at a very beautiful B&B, Casa Sol Zipolite owned by our friends Jorge Silva and Craig Hudson of The Red Tree House fame.

So far, I have had the privilege of going to museums and galleries with Judy in Portland, Seattle, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Barcelona, London, Mexico City, and in Amsterdam. Next year we are going to Italy and Greece. I'm getting quite the education with Judy and I want to share her knowledge with you!

We will explore abstractions, acrylic techniques and materials. She is going to keep us hopping. Judy will show you how to use a limited palette to unify your color choices and how to use line and collage to strengthen your composition.

I've watched her in many of our workshops say one thing to someone and off they go exploring and creating something so new to them and it turns out to be wonderful. This past workshop in Northumberland, England, she had us purposely make paintings that were ugly, then she showed us how to fix them. We loved this exercise.

I love the mark making and excavation details on this small part of one of Judy's paintings. If you haven't followed her on Instagram, this woman is going crazy painting every day. Just amazing.

This workshop will be worth every peso. It's going to be intense but also restorative as we languish along the sea and pools. Oaxaca coast in a small beach town the first part of April. Sunshine, sand, good food, walks along the water, swimming in the pool, lots of libations and art talk with friends. Sounds heavenly to me. Won't you join us. Lets paint Mexico together with Judy!
