Woven Vessels
Here are a few of the woven vessels I made over the weekend at the Adventures of the Woven Vessel with Shannon Weber at Randi Harper's The Ranch Arts & Crafts Center in Snohomish, WA. I now walk gazing at the ground to see what "natural" things I can pick up. Builder Bob is going to have to build another shed, I'm afraid. And go for long walks with shears and baskets in hand. It will be good exercise for him.
Offerings, was made using branches, wire, pods, bark, handmade paper, encaustic wax, waxed linen thread, and oil sticks.
This piece began by bending cane into a boat configuration, encasing it with tissue from a sewing pattern using methylcellulose glue which stiffens the material as it dries. I then added encaustic medium, embedded paper that I stitched, then fused to the outside. Inside I added medium, then a piece of fabric which I embellished with handmade paper from Chiapas, Mexico that has a leaf sandwiched between layers of paper. I stitched the edges with waxed linen thread and added feathers and tails of more waxed thread to the outside.
I created this handmade woven basket which I encased again with tissue then I added handmade paper that I stitched to the frame, adding the button and feathers as a final adornment.
