Creating Paintings With Embroidery

What do you think of when you think of embroidery? Pillow cases your grandmother made for your hope chest? Yes, some girls had hope chests!  For me, it is a quilt I made for a friend's first and only child made of squares that I embroidered of animals and cartoon images.

While Judy Wise was at my house teaching two workshops this month, we talked about how excited we are about traveling to Antigua next January (winter!) with Katie Kendrick when the weather will be warmer and we will be able to fill our senses with all of the exquisite textiles from the area.

This piece is by Judy. Isn't it fabulous? She made it as a class sample to show that what we will be creating is more like paintings or scenes that tell a story. It's certainly not one of the pillow cases of my youth!

When Judy was describing in detail what we will be doing, she shared an Instagram artist, Moscow artist, Lisa Smirnova for inspiration. Wowzers. Here are a couple of Smirnova's pieces. She specializes in wearable art. Look her up on Google or on Instagram. Her pieces are exquisite.
