Chen Portrait of a Young Girl

This week in Sharon Tomlinson's Diary of Faces, our assignment was to investigate a Singapore artist. I chose Georgette Chen, as did most of the students in class, but I did in particular because of the portrait I chose to paint (see below my rendition of the painting). Chen was known for her Post-impressionist styled oil painting at the turn of the 20th-century. Born to a privilege life, she grew up in Paris, went to High School in the states, and attended Art Students League of New York for a year in 1926 before returning home to Paris where she continued her studies, eventually married, and practiced her art. Later, she was awarded the Singapore Cultural Medallion in 1982 and over 100 of her works are owned and displayed by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). She died in 1993 of complications from Rheumatoid arthritis.
